Sydney FC 1-0 Central Coast Mariners Match: Sydney FC v Central Coast Mariners, Hyundai A-League (Round 1)
Reporter: Hughgeta (Australia)
Mark Milligan (Sydney) Holds Off Andre Gumprecht (Central Coast)Sydney FC, the early favorites for the competition, were determined to start the season well under new coach Terry Butcher. Butcher, the former English international, had come to Sydney over the winter with the single goal: to retain their title. Ironically, their Sydney's first opponents would be the Central Coast Mariners, whom they defeated 1-0 in the Grand Final back in March.
The Mariners, who had new signings Tony Vidmar, Vuko Tamsevic and Jamie McMaster all starting, had come out of a pre-season cup final loss full of confidence. Sydney started their signings Alex Brosque and Nick Topor-Stanley, as well as co-captain Dwight Yorke, who had not played a match since the World Cup.
Yorke and Sydney's lack of fitness showed from the kick-off, as Central Coast dominated through a strong midlfield of Andre Gumprecht, Noel Spencer and Tomasevic. They held all the early possession, while Sydney struggled to move the ball to their lone striker Sasho Petrovski. Central Coast created the first chance, as a free kick was missed by everyone, and Adam Kwasnik popped up at the far post. His header, which was on target, was superbly saved by Clint Bolton, whose contribution turned out to be decisive. Topor-Stanley had a free header for Sydney, but this proved wasteful.
The half-time break was much needed by Sydney, as they came out with some new found confidence. It wasn't long before a (seemingly) careless punt up the field from Alvin Ceccoli was brought down by Petrovski. Petrovski laid it off to a steaming Iain Fyfe, who's brilliant low drive sent it past Mariners' keeper Danny Vukovic, with interest.
The goal did not stop Sydney coming forward as they dominated the second half. They brought on striker David Zdrilic, and Brosque soon found his feet, and in turn, plenty of space. David Carney shot wide from a good chance, as did mark Mark Milligan. But it was left to keeper Bolton to ensure the three points as he pulled off a string of late saves to deny the Mariners.
After a cross was driven across goal by Tomasevic, Kwasnik was left waiting at the far post, but only this time his finish let him down. Keeping this in mind, Bolton's save was top quality as he palmed down the shot before it was cleared off the line. This miss ensured it was Sydney's night.
Sydney paid due respect to 'The Cove' before heading back into the dressing rooms of Aussie Stadium, while the Mariners were left to lament missed opportunities. Nevertheless, it is a long season, and this game gave no clues as to who could possibly be the early pace-setters in 'Version 2' of the Australian A-League.
